alot of good answers and alot of mean answers mine is sincere. It takes alot of work to get disability. just depression in its self no you would be eligible. severe and debilitating depression yes u can apply as part of the requirement u have to be out of work for an extended period of time i think its either 6 months or a year. that means no work what so ever. which for some people trying to live is a hard thing to do. You have to be diagnosed by a dr and they evaluate u at social security. its not an easy thing to get on if you're legitimate but if u have an angle it seems easy. alot of people who don't need to be on it are. People have told me that you more then likely get denied the first time this is a process that takes a long time and i think its better to try and fix your depression with meds that make u workable or at least partially workable. because no cash flow for 6 months or more may be hard. hope this helps.

I applied for ssi and I have depression, anxiety, bi polar type 2, mood disorders, have been in the hospital several times over the years, and had 3 doctors suggest that I receive ssi. Didn't work.

Because of the abuse of the system, it has become difficult for anyone to receive benefits of any kind - especially those who really need it. Depression is a hard egg to crack. There are so many meds on the market that can balance and control depression so that people can work so it would be hard to convince a judge or Social Security administrator that you can't work. Your physician would have to have plenty of documents to support your inability to work. If the person is a severe case and other mental issues are involved, it might be different.

Approval depends on a lot of factors, and each case is considered independently. I would consult my doctor first thing Major depression can be debilitating and should be taken seriously. Good luck and God bless!
