because back when they were first made they were stacked onto a stick so that roving bakers could easily carry them to sell to people on the streets. so the bagel would go right over the stick, through the hole.

Bagels have holes in them because donuts have holes in them...and why do donuts have holes in them......the legend is:

Way back when there was the ship captain who just love to eat has pastries(baked dough with nuts) while at the helm of his ship. Now from time to time he'd need both hands on the wheel, so he had to put his donut somewhere. His spot was on the spoke of the wheel. After a couple times, he simply asked the chief to make them with holes so he could just put them there to start with.....

Good question and I'm not going to give you my honest opinion, it's alittle bit naughty.But one thing I will say is I bet the inventors of the bagel are male....
