Here's a site to help you figure it out (there's no easy answer):

It really depends on what city you live in and what airlinew serve your local airport that you need to consider first. Most major airlines work on milage while Southwest works on segments. You also need to consider where you want to be going when you redeem your milage. Do they have an alliance?? If you travel internationally, who is the alliance with?? How many cities do I have access to with this alliance?? How many other non-alliance airlines can I redeem milage with??? You also want to consider your 3 options, Visa and Mastercard are more widely accepted than American Express. AMEX is a pay in full at the end of the month kind of card as well.

Check out Consumer Reports. You do have to pay to register, but you may be able to look at them all across the board and compare better than taking someone's advise from here. Go to the link below and you will see the link for Milage-award cards under Credit Card and Billing. The annual fee is $26 or you can pay $4.95/month. I find this website very helpful when making an investment decision or purchasing a large value item.

I like the JetBlue AMEX(if JetBlue is in your area) and also Capital One's no Hassle miles card. The Jet Blue card gets you a flight anywhere in the US with 20,000 points and the No Hassle card is only $20 a year and can get you a flight for as little as 15,000 points.
