There are a million and one ways to save on a wedding. Consider renting your wedding gown.... after all, why spend all that money on something you will only wear once. Yes, I know, we want to pass that on to our children.... but honestly....... did you REALLY want to wear your mother's wedding gown? If you don't want to rent it, you can also choose from many different styles at a consignment shop. They usually take payments, too.

If you are a member of a church, consider having your wedding there. The pastor/priest/reverend/father (whatever you may call him) usually would be honored to perform the ceremony. All they usually ask for is a donation to the church.

Hold the reception at a community center or something like that. They are usually inexpensive and have pretty open areas. Or, depending on where you are at, rent a pavillion on a lakeside. Then you can use it for both the wedding and the reception.

As far as decorations, balloons and confetti go a loooong way. Use those for decoration. Buy little bottles of bubbles for the guests. You can buy those in bulk (about 50 at a time). Wrap them in tulle that matches your wedding colors and tie a ribbon in the accent color around the top of it. Great souvenirs! Place a bunch in a basket next to the guest book and wa-la!

Another way to save is by letting your guests be the photographers. You can go on ebay or to someplace like Sam's and find packages of disposable cameras that either do or dont include the cost of getting the film developed. Buy some of those disposable cameras and place them on a few tables. Different people will get different things all night long. It is much easier than relying on one person for the photography for the entire evening.

Buy more tulle and tie it in a big bow on the backs of chairs at each end and in the middle of each table. Easy decorations. You can buy plastic table cloths at a party supply place, by the roll. Get clear glass bowls at Wal-mart, some floating candles and those little glass flat rocks in your colors. Put some of the rocks in the bottom of the bowl, fill it with water, light the floating candles. Pretty pretty... Sprinkle with love/wedding confetti and you have centerpieces. Use the same bows to tie along the ends of the rows, to line the aisle, as decorations.

You can also call your local florists and they will usually give you the petals that have fallen off the roses for free. Call around to a couple (or more) florists just a few days in advance, and tell them you are throwing your parents a surprise anniversary party and you want to make it nice for them and ask for any of the rose petals they have that fall off or they take off. Sprinkle those along the tables, too, and/or the aisle.....beautiful and romantic.

Buy fake flowers and create your own bouquets. You can buy them in bulk and get either florist tape or the plastic cones to enter the flowers into. While you are at it, use some of the flowers to make something special for each of your bridesmaids. I used mine for hairpieces for each of mine.

If you really wanted to be creative, you could make your own invitations, too. You can use americangreetings.com or, if you love to stamp, stamp them. While you are at it, dont forget the thank you cards and all of it with matching envelopes.

You will be amazed at the money you save. Plus, planning in advance helps. I took 8 1/2 months to do all my stuff. I spent a total of $1000..... half of that was my dress, including alterations, cleaning and accessorizing it all. The rest was doing as much as I could for myself.

Order the dress over the Internet, it is so much less expensive than a boutique, and they offer the same designers and styles. As for souvenirs (wedding favors), I just went to a wedding that did chopsticks for favors and bamboo as centerpieces. It was really elegant. I have seen crackers (like Christmas crackers, but for weddings, the kind you pull apart, not the kind you eat) for favors, you can order them on line too. Receptions are less expensive if you do a buffet, but they are a little less "classy" than a sit down meal, and you run the risk of running out of food. Make sure and buy your bride a wedding gift, and let her pick the flowers. If you are getting married in a church, contact them as soon as possible, also the hall.

Try to use people that you know in those industries. Ask them for a discount. When I got married, my future brother-in-law worked in the kitchen at a hotel. We were able to get all of our appetizers at cost. He knew how to prepare them and did that for us. We only served appetizers and fruit and cheese trays at the reception. You know, lots of finger foods. It was buffet style. We set them up at different stations. One of my aunts used own a bakery and she made the cake for us. She even got offers from other people at the hotel after they saw the cake.
Oh, the hotel where we had the reception gave us our honeymoon suite for free. We worked out a deal since we were having the reception there and if we could get a certain amount of our guests to stay at the hotel...you know.
Ask other people to loan you things. Like the petticoat/slip, a tiara, jewelry. You'll be surprised at what people have lying around. These are things that you don't really use again anyway.
We had the ceremony at a park. They didn't charge their usual setup fee because we had our friends and brothers help setup and we had our rehersal dinner at the pavilion at that park. The park director (also a wedding planner) catered the dinner for $500.00. The food was delicious.
We made a CD of some of our favorite songs for the souviners. If you have a computer with a CD burner, this is easy to do. Just pay for the downloads and burn them on a disk. We bought packs of the recordable CDs whenever we caught them on sale. We even used a picture of ourselves for the jacket cover. It was a lot of work but saved a lot of money.
My sister made baskets for the bridal party. That was her gift to me. She put in slippers, lotion, bath oils and beads, candles, soap and a towel. I added the jewelry that I wanted the ladies to wear during the ceremony. It was costume jewelry that I found on sale at a dept. store. The groommen got pocket watches (this was a bit expensive) that we put on lay-a-way.
We cut cost wherever we could. Our ceremony was beautiful and we even released Doves. Our guests thought that we had spent much more money than we did.
Choose your photographer wisely. This is an area where you really want someone who knows what they are doing. They don't have to be the most expensive, but find someone reputable. I would ask around in the city where I was getting married.

Congrats! My fiance and I are getting married next June, and we're having the ceremony and reception at a nearby state park. Everything is SO beautiful, requiring minimal decoration, and is also very cheap to use. For your reception, you could either have a dessert bar or a pot luck! (If you do dessert, make sure it's after dinner time so no one is expecting a meal!) I'm skipping the catering deal simply because it costs sooo much. Check out theknot.com! It's the greatest... it'll tell you everything you need to know.

Even couples with modest budgets can use the help of a wedding planner. Sometimes they can even save you money because they know all the vendors. Plus, they often have wonderful ideas!! You can find them in the phone book or on the internet.

you dont need to pay for a wedding planner, one of my friends was mine, it really helps to have some one else to remember and stress! at my wedding we used lots of candels and string lights, borrowed punch bowls and such if you look for things hard enough then you can find it cheap! there is a yahoo group called freecycle that you can get tons of stuff in your area! check it out
