It's easy, they have to believe in something that they have never seen and know they never will see (even at the gates you don't have eyes anymore). And they give this being that they believe exists their greatest gift, their soul. So if they can believe in this, they can be brainwahed. Also, most went to church as a ritual not as an education experience. Many still go because they are used to going, not because they are trying to learn to be better Christians. They are 100% following something they can never KNOW exists. It is hard for them to keep their own minds if they believe in this.

they were fed a big fear. the fear of what happens to the rest of eternity. they were fed a lie. they were told that if they dont do what they are told to do then satan will make them suffer unimaginable pains in the afterlife for eternity. and sadly because they dont know what really goes on after they die they are way too afraid to challange it since obviously since there is SOOO many christians then they must be right? well the same ones that beleive that hype will tell you "if all your friends jump off a cliff you would jump with them?" and the whole time they believe christianity that is exactly what they are doing. they are following the crowd of christians as misguided as they are. and the common theme i get when i talk to them about all the contradictions in their beliefs is i would rather be wrong then worry about going to hell. but the problem is there is substantial proof of what happens after you die and if they looked it up for themselves they would find that out. but they would rather have the measly faith in the priests that reassure them that since they belong to the church that jesus is their ticket into heaven.

What do you consider 'brainwashed'? Why do you feel this way? I can only speak for myself but when I considered all of the trash the world put in my brain, it needed washing. I'm happy with my life and my hopes for the future Paradise under God's Kingdom. I appreciate the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for me. Are you happy? Probably not.

Because they choose to be. A book with absolute, unquestionable answers is comforting. Joining a congregation brings comfort and friendship, as well as a support group.
Sometimes people live morally because of their religion, but for the most part they blindly follow the absolute arbitrary rules that the founder(s) of their religion invented several thousand years ago. And as you know, that ain't morality! It's just self-indulgent self-righteousness... which religions thrive on, unfortunately.

They are told as children that they will be eternally tortured if they dare "think" differently than what they are being told about "God". If you question their belief system when they are an adult, that old fear flares up and blocks their ability to use logic thought. It's a form of PTSD flashback and a cruel thing to do to children.

Your imposition of superstitious nonsense on unsuspecting, harmless toddlers must be against the regulation. How can pushing your primitive faerie memories onto a baby not be seen imposing? Get a clue.

they tend to take things at face value. For instance, their preacher, pastor, priest... ect..., tells them something, and instead of going to look it up and interpret it for themselves, they just take the *insert religious leader*'s word that that is exactly what a particular passage means. they are not brainwashed, they are just misinformed as to what is actually said in the bible.

Because the grave is cold and barren and permanent. The belief of an afterlife lessens the permanence and diminishes the horror.

One word, HOPE. By clinging to a belief system, even a false one, they have hope and, in some ways, a scapegoat for things that go wrong. Without that they would have to deal with things as they are.
