My parents and I don't get along and they are always trying to control my life. Should I tell them where I plan to go to college or just keep it a secret?

My parents won't be contributing financially; I am going to my dad's rival school.

You said you and your parents don't get along. Does this mean you do not love them? I am sure you do. turn the tables and think about your question.

you go to bed tonight and when you wake up your parents are gone - they didn't bother to tell you and didn't leave a note as to where they were.

would you be worried? would you be hurt? would you feel like maybe they should have told you? I think that would be a yes.

and you know that no matter what you love your parents and would not want them to worry about what happened to you.

You going to college so this tells me your smart - I think maybe you could if you really wanted to find ways to improve the relationship you have with your parents.

best of luck.

I can see why you don't get along with them. If you still live with them, you should move out now and start supporting yourself. Either that or learn to respect your parents, after all they are the only ones that have been there and will always be there for you.

If you aren't going to start respecting them, don't bother telling them, that way when you need a little extra cash, they'll have no idea where to send it. Make sure they don't know where you bank as well, so they can never contribute to your bank account.

Yes you have to tell your parents. Even if they won't be contributing financially you will still need their signature on forms until you turn 18. In the eyes of the government you are considered dependent on your parents until you turn 24 or are married so in order to fill out the FASA and recieve any federal assistance you will have to have your parents' tax information and their signature. I'm sure your parents will be happy that you're going to college and what school you go to may not make them excited but they will get over it.

Who is paying for your college education?

If they are, then you need to let them know where you plan to go. If you anticipate difficulties because of the choice, enlist the help and support of an adult friend, counselor, teacher. Also, be ready to tell them the reasons you have made that choice, and all the things that school has to offer you, especially the things it has over other schools.

If they are not going to foot ANY of the costs involved, then you don't HAVE to tell them ... but you might want to anyway, in same way as above ... but they don't really have any say if you aren't relying on them for any financial support.

Good luck!

Tell your parents where you are going. Unless they are paying for it they can't tell you where you can go. Keeping it a secret can cause more problems than it will solve. Just realize that if you could cause a rift between your parents by going where you want to go. But please go to the college of your choice it is your life but it could cause problems or a rift. Best of luck to you. They should be happy that you are going to college.

You should tell your parents about what you want to do. After all, you'd be expecting them to help you out when you get to college, right?

I believe it is best that you talk to your parents seriously. Tell them how you feel and ask them why they seem to be controlling about your life. Be open. Maybe when they hear you out, they will be able to explain their side and you'd see where they are coming from.

Sometimes, all it takes is open communication.

No matter the differences between y'all, thats the only parents you have & the only ones who'll love you regardless. I think you owe them that much. Tell them. Would you lke it if they moved off & didn't tell you where? Think about it.

Well - they aren't paying for your college education? You have all the money you need to pay it for yourself?... even if you had a full ride scholarship, they would find out that sort of thing...
