I had this arguement with a girl a just met and she thinks it is most annoying to be called any term of endearment by a complete stranger. I personally think she's being to neurotic over the subject.

I think that it's ok. It's just being kind to someone. Some people just have a habit of calling people by those types of names. I personally think it is nice to be called by those names, and it gives me an oppurtunity to flirt with guys. lol

you're right. she is being neurotic and over-sensitive about it. it's completely normal and ok to be called "sweetheart" or otherwise by a stranger. it's just like when a stranger smiles or waves. it's called being POLITE. most people do it. she's taking it too personal. it's fine to be called any term of endearment by a stranger. tell her to see a therapist and get over it.

It is very annoying to be called terms of endearment by a stranger! It is a sign of love when it is from your significant other, but when you don't know the person it is belittling and rude! It shows that the person does not see you as an equal but as being of lesser value than them-self. If you were raised by someone who did this it is understandable because to you it would then seem normal, but you should stop doing it immediately!! It could be costing you potential friends.

I agree with the woman. Especially if it was in the workplace. You are putting her in a lower position than you. I had this problem before, and it was actually a woman that was calling me "honey," "sweetie, and "baby." I told her, "I would prefer that you address me as AdjoAdjo or Mrs. AdjoAdjo. Referring to me as honey, sweetie, etc... undermines my position as not only a woman, but a professional, and that is not something that I will tolerate." She never called me sweetie again. I think you should not refer to any woman you don't know as sweetie. And further, if she is a woman you work with, definitely do not call her sweetie. Matter of fact, the only sweetheart you should refer to is your wife and/or girlfriend, and daughter. It is great that you asked at least. Many people walk around blindly repeating the same mistakes.

I can see both sides of this one. Personally it doesn't really bother me. Most people call others "sweetheart" to be nice. But it can be taken as a form of sexual harrassment. These days you need to be careful over what you say/call people. Neurotic? Quite possibly. It just depends at how you look at it...

Personally, it pisses me off. It makes an awkward situation, because it IS a term of endearment. Plus, it often makes women feel inferior. Would you call another man "sweetheart"?

i dont think is wrong, but depends on the tone u say it, like if ur trying a pick up line. (if the girl wanted to be picked-up is ok but if she didnt then is wrong).THATS REALLY MESSED UP. remember old ladies say stuff like that all the time and it dosent seem to bother anyone, so why should it bother me if some one else did?
Im with u she is being too neurotic over the subject, but if she didndt like it just apologize (maybe she liked u and is pretending to be miss goody 2 shoes)

Only if you are over 60.
Really, it's not a big deal. Some people are just friendly and in some parts of the county (mainly the South) it's just a habit people get into. Now, if it's some guy in a bar, a little insulting.

Lots of women don't like to be called 'pet names' by a stranger. It should be ok to do so if you are just doing it in a general sort of way, but as flirting or being annoying, we do not like it.

I agree with you on her being nuerotic cause when a man calls me that it makes me feel good even if i got a man, it just shows me that their are stilll nice people out there. I call everyone hun or baby but that is just the kind of person that i am cause i feel that everyone weather i know them or not deserves to feel like they are special and like they are noticed
