I just got my very first pit and I LOVE her to death, she's a total sweetie and wonderful with my kids. DH has had a few in the past and he feels the same way about them.

Just wondering, what's YOUR view on them?

Every pit I have ever known thinks it belongs in your lap. I have pictures to prove the gentleness of pits around baby. Anyway, I love them. I can't wait till more people in the world relaize this.

OK her i go. Pits are not big monsters that kill everything they see. Just like in the 50's German Shepperd's the big bad dog, then it was the dobie. Some breed is always the bad breed. News reporters do not help when they say that its a pit when it is not just to make their report sound better. My pit loves kids, cats and ginnie pigs. In 96% of pit bull attacks were it was really a pit it was a dog tortured fought staved or drop or just plain run loose by owners who are not responsible. All the BLS is only hurting families that do the right thing and take care of their pets. Pass laws that make owners of dangerous dogs pay and go to jail. If these people are all ready breaking the law why would anyone think they wouldn't break a ban. Think criminals don't care about the law. Thats why breed bans have not been any good.

Pitts are great dogs if treated properly.
Just give her lots of stimulation and work to do and she will be the perfect dog for you and your kids. They don't all of the sudden turn on their owners any more than most breeds. In fact there are allot of breeds that do it more. It's just that when a pit does it it can be worse than when a cocker spaniel does it (which is much more likely to snap) also, whenever someone see one of six or seven different dogs that look like a pit, But are nowhere near the same, they think it is.
I just saw a question on this site wundering what kind of dog the Target dog was and more than a few people thought it was a pit or a type of bull terrier or a pitbull terrier.

I own one, Harley, and he is a wonderful dog. He's great with my kids, ages 2-14. He gets along great with all 5 of my cats, and my 13 other dogs I have as well. I foster dogs and have everything from a chihuahua to a great pyr to a rottweiler at the moment. And I trust my Pit more than I do any of my other dogs around everyone.
I think you must be very responsible and dog saavy to own a Pit, this is not a dog that can just be tossed in the back yard and forgotten. They must be kept very well socialized.
People are just misinformed about this breed of dog sadly. they really make great, loving pets. They are not the aggressive, child eating monsters the media portrays them to be.
No dog bite has ever been the fault of the dog in my opinion, it is the fault of the irresponsible owners!

Got a pit too. He loves everyone and every thing. Every pit I have known that was family owned *** been a good people dog.
When someone takes care and dose the responable thing pit bulls are great dogs. If the people who own them beats , keeps them chained in the yard with a 3 foot chain, keepps foo dfrom them to make them mad, fights them and then just lets them run free they will be a monster looking for something to kill. In the past three years in las Vegas and N.Las Veags every case of a pit attacking someone or some dog it as a dog like teh ones I just described. Sad really one guy who fought dogs own son was almost killed by the dog he had mistreated. Two months later he was arrested for doing thing same thing. SOme peopl never learn

There aren't bad dogs, only bad owners. Pits have a bad rap but in reality they can make the best family pets. If possible, know the dog parents of the pit you are adopting. It will tell you a lot about how it's temperment will be.

See this quote I found:
"In reviewing and studying over 448 cases of fatal dog attacks in the United States, it is apparent that the three most critical factors that contribute to a fatal dog attack are: function of the dog, owner responsibility and reproductive status of the dog. There is no documented case where a single, neutered, household pit bull was the cause of a human fatality.” Karen Delise, Author of Fatal Dog Attacks

Every dog has it's own temperament. The only problem I have with pitts is that if they do snap and bite someone then they're mouth locks and it can be very difficult to remove the dog without doing a lot of damage. Having said that I don't think that any dogs should be banned or have prejudice against them. I personally have had 3 rotts and loved each of them to death. You can't tell a dogs temperament by the breed but by how they are raised and their breeding.

I have never owned a pit and never will. I think that most pits are probably great pets, but I do know that they can be fine for years and then suddenly kill their owners. I do think that bad breeding and the way they are raised contributes to the way the dogs turn out.

I like them as much as any other dog. Breeding ethics matter in that a breeder who breeds for good temperament is likely to produce great dogs and one who breeds in order to win in the show ring despite knowing that the dog has a temperament issue, isn't doing the breed any favor. Beyond that, I think it's a matter of recognizing the strength and natural instinct of any dog. A sight hound will run off like a fool if left to his/her own devices, a Pit is more likely to chase with purpose - it's about knowing the breed, doing the proper training and not losing sight of the fact that any dog needs to be controlled in some way.

I own a dog walking business and I work in a grooming salon - I've never met a bad pit bull. They are very very sweet dogs who, unfortunately because of a few jacka$$es have gotten a bad reputation.

There is no such thing as a bad dog - just a bad owner.

I love them. I own one and take great care to not let him ever be one that ends up in the news. We recently had a law passed that basically allows for someone to see your dog and if the dog barks or shows what someone else may consider aggression they can demand that you spay or neuter your dog regardless of wether it is a show or working dog. Mine is neutered and I did it for several reasons. I felt no need to add to the population and god knows there are enough unwanted pits out there as well as I did not want to encourage people stealing him, he is basically worthless to those type of people because he is neutered. and it focuses his attention on his family not his need to procreate. I love them. just always remember, you will spend alot of time defending her and alot of time making sure the wrong type of people don't get around her. do not allow her to be aggressive ever under any circumstances. if she loves you and your family she will do this automatically. don't tolerate food aggression and always make sure she knows you are the alpha.
Good luck
