I'm referring to the child of a family friend, etc. so the baby may not be very comfortable with me yet.

stay calm yourself, they fed off your emotions
dont try so hard, they can sense your fake-ness

As a nurse that has worked with newborns for over 20 years in a hospital and a mother of 3 grown children. When we had a baby that cried a lot in the nursery we had a warm blanket that we wrapped the baby in. You can just throw a baby blanket in the dryer for a minute, check the temperature before putting it around the baby. Really works. Also they have Cd's and sound machines that play the mother's heart beat, which helps babies go to sleep, we used this for the preemie babies.

First try to determine what the reason for the crying is. Is the baby wet? Is the clothing too restrictive or too loose? Is he/she hungry or thirsty? Could the baby have gas or need burping? Perhaps the baby's missing his familiar family? If you've checked all of these things, then perhaps just holding the baby closely to you & walking or rocking him or singing or dancing gently with him. Or try a baby swing or pushing him in a stroller. Maybe the movement would help distract him.

first check all these things is the baby hungry? is the baby tired (if you put baby to bed and baby still crys it is ok to just leave child to cry they will soon tire them selves out and go to sleep always check on child though to make sure it not ill)
does the baby need changing could baby be too hot or too cold is baby teething (if so try feeding frozen banana it works a treat but is a bit messy!)
also try giving baby water instead of milk sometime they can just be thirsty!
if all above does not work take to doctors
hope this has helped.
good luck.
p.s i look after i little boy and some times when i am trying to get him to sleep i take him for drive and he falls asleep within minutes

First, try to give the baby some food or drink.. Find out if they are too cold or too hot. Maybe they are tired. Try singing & rocking the baby. Give the baby their favourite toy/blanket, etc. Put the baby in a baby swing, or go for a car ride.

First check that the baby isn't hungry, dirty or too hot or cold. Then try a warm bath and if that doesn't help swaddle the baby (wrap him/her up in a bunny rug) if that doesn't help try rocking the baby and singing to him/her, you could also check the baby doesn't need to be burped, and if all else fails go for a walk with the pram or stroller or for a drive in the car.

HOPE THIS HELPS!

Are you babysitting or just visiting. If you are just visiting hand the baby back to one of the parents. If you are caring for the baby, well it depends on the age of the baby. You can swaddle it, rock it, sing to it, sway with it, walk it, take it for a ride in the car, feed it, make funny faces at it, tell it a story. Okay, that's all I can think of right now.

Do you have the baby's car seat? Sometimes taking a drive will quiet a crying baby, if you think the parents wouldn't mind you doing it.

The baby might be collicky, so gas drops (they go for around $10 a bottle) might help. Car rides help, and white noise helps a lot for mine! If all else fails, tell your friend to check his/her temperature and give him/her tylenol. This will at least help the baby sleep for a while.

My nephew is also a cry baby! He is 2 yr old! It is better to play with him and laugh with him! Make him see that you love him! Do not get fustrated when he gets upset and starts crying! Just smile at him and try to play!

well if he/she is hungry feed it

if he/she went "stinky" change its diaper

if the baby is tired or just wants attention then rock the baby gently or bounce him or her gently

singing softly calms the baby

or you could just play peek a boo

if the baby continues to cry, let him or her cry and they will within 5-15 minutes fall asleep
