I hate to tell you this - but not being mean - may be part of the reason why he's in this mess. Kids act out because they want/need someone to apply some correction and boundaries in his life. You need to find someone who can step in for you and show you how this is done. Have you seen the movie, Raising Helen? Well, it's kind of like that. You've got to step in an totally take control - even if it's not enjoyable - he'll only hate you for a season and he'll love you for life for straigtening him out. You might not want to call him names though.

By "junky" do you mean sloppy or a slob?

If this is the case, you can start following him around and telling him in great detail what is wrong and how to correct it. "James, put your socks & shoes away." or "James, don't leave the same underwear on for 5 days running." Eventually it becomes routine for him to do the things you find distasteful, and you will no longer have to remind him of what to do properly.

GIRL... WHY ARE YOU WITH A JUNKY. (is it drugs or messy)..
Drugs - Drop him off at rehab.
Messy - Develop a way to hep him clean and organize his life with a trip to Bed Bath and Beyond, the Container Store and Wal-Mart.
