Has there been a fighter that only trains himself without anyone by reading books and studying moves? I want to know if there is a fighter out there that accomplish his goals without a trainer by doing these?

Maurice Smith - the great heavyweight kickboxing champion and Ultimate Fighting Heavyweight Champion - always announced, at least when he was the heavyweight kickboxing champion of the world that he trained himself and he turned out just fine! Of course he had a trainer from a young age and did have trainers throughout his life but mostly as a professional he trained himself. The founder of Kyokushin Karate, Masutatsu Oyama, spent 18 months alone in the mountains of Japan to train and apparently only took one book with him and also apparently competed in underground (like Kumite) matches and legend has it that he never lost a fight.

Miyamoto Musashi, one of the legendary swordsman from Japan, had no formal training. If memory serves me correctly he taught himself to wield two swords and defeated many people in duels. He also wrote a book which is still published to day.

there are several of fable of men who studied kung fu by walking through the wilderness and watching animals fight, but bottom line is if you want to be a good fighter then you have to get into fights. trainer or not fighting is the only way to improve your skills for reals.

there are some fighters out there who study on their own, but none of them accomplish their goals. If you wish to be an accomplished martial artist, you have to dedicate yourself to a new lifestyle, join a dojo or ryu, and practice, study, practice study, and learn.

In essence, training is to improve your skills right?

Working out or getting in shape can be done alone.

If a fighter truely wants to keep up his skills and improve then he needs other people to help him train.
