health is an important thing!! make sure the "puppy farm" ur buying from has papers. and if ur buying from someone who bought it from a "puppy farm" or the pound, then make sure they have the # of the orginization and PAPERS!!! yes because we didnt know where the heck ours came from!! he could have come from a local unauthorized breeding area that recently got busted. u don't want that. they can b expensive(up to more that $600 for a purebred) look for either miniature(height-12-13in) regular(13-14in) or Harrier(15-20in) look for good color markings( "butterscotch" is white and tan and brown, and the regular markings are four white paws, black back, and tan or brown in between the two. check their ears. little black spots that rub off is a sign of mites. check their teeth. pink, healthy gums. check their eyes. clear, not cloudy, not watery, and a thick black lining around them is good. it's natural. if the tail has a tuft on the end they say it is a sign of a true purebred beagle, but that could b myth. check the claws. they should be clear and hard, not flaky. does the dog look in pain? does it look thin or sickly? use ur good judgemennt and buy smart!!. oh, and if u find a purebred REALLY cheap, there's usually something wrong!!! inspect and analyze. this is ur best friend ur talking about!!!
do u know what 2 expect from a beagle? they are energetic and LOVE people, and they get into tons of trouble when left alone. they also have a very weird habit...they eat poop. it sometimes gets better with training,(a good firm NO a slight hand spank on the nose, and maybe confinement to the cage, they need good firm training) ours did, but he used to eat the litterbox like it was takeout! Oh! and u will want to train them NOT 2 bark!! they have a cute but annoying "bay" that the neighbors won't like too much. u definately need an identification chip bc if they get out, they get so curious that they follow the trail of whatever and never find their way home. also, something else weird, we have a male beagle, and we didn't fix him bc we wanted to breed eventually, but unfortunately he thought our cat was his girlfriend...yeah...nasty. be sure to give it top rate food and not feed it scraps bc they loooove people food and theyll start stealing it fom the table...trash....the plate u left beside ur bed last night... etc. bad dog!!
overall, a beagle is the best choice in my opinion for a good dog, and a good friend. mine is sitting at my feet smiling at me!!

Make sure breed appropriate health testing has been done. I don't know what is all tested for with Beagles, but you should be able to get info from the American Beagle clubs website, as well as breeder referal. Buy from someone who shows or hunts, rather than someone who is just looking to make some quick cash.
Be aware that hounds are not nearly as trainable as most other breeds. They are also very smart and tend to be naughty. Beagles are also rather vocal. Wonderful dogs though, I could easily have a Beagle!

The same as any breed, do you want a placid dog, then pick the puppy sittting all alone in the corner. Do you want a dog that will be quite social, then let the dog that comes up to you, be your dog. Please make sure the puppy chooses you and not the other way round.

Make very sure that your neighbors don't mind barking annoying dogs because those dogs can cause trouble with their bark.
