AT&T are crooks! I would check your local phone book for service providers in your area. I switched to Sage TeleCom. They have free call waiting, free caller ID, unlimited local, and 500 minutes of long distance for $50 a month...it's about the same that you would pay for a cell phone.

Yes, there are often choices. One choice would be to go with a competitve local exchange carrier (CLEC) who would lease your line from AT&T and resell it to you. Or, you might have a cable company with phone service, that would really cut AT&T out of the picture. Or you could just go with a cellphone.
