The Bible is a study. It is not ment to be read as a novel. I have been a Christian for 6 yrs and have not made it through all of the Bible. But I know many, many who have. But none who have , that I know would tell yo to just start at the begining and read to the end.
I recomend Starting in The New Testiment. Try First John. Or Luke Chapt 1 & 2 and then go to First John...
for my pov on the Bible:

our entire church does it every year, for 34 years. We start in September and read five chapters a day until May. My dad read it seven times through last year, He would get up at 4 in the morning and stay up really late reading it.
We also have a Bible school, where reading the Bible cover to cover is a requirement, not an option, because you have to take a test
I passed it only missed two questions.
you have to name the
books in order
author of each book
spell the names of teh books correctly
date (approximate) the book was written
and three facts/events about the book/author
they can't be bogus like "he was a man" either.
There are people out here who still hold it dear, and precious and to be read and applied to life.

I don't run around asking people that question so I don't know for sure. I know I've read the entire Bible many times. I know my Pastor and some other Pastors I know from my church and other churches I visit have read it many times.
As to how long it takes, it all depends upon the person and their schedule and if they are just powering through the Bible or taking the time to meditate on the Scriptures and compare passages with other passages and reading commentaries or study notes while they are reading.
I could easily read through the Bible in a couple of days if I just read it like any other book. Back before I became a Christian, when I was lost in my sins, I would lie around on a Sunday with a hang over and read 3 books of over 200 pages having to do with science fiction or heroic fantasy just to take my mind off of my head ache so if I read the Bible like that I could do it in 3 days.

I did when I was young. I also know quite a few people who have. One could read it in about a week. It takes much longer to understand it.
this is a very good question. I will say a person can only make an educated decision about something if he has take time to learn the facts. I can respect the atheist that has 13 Bibles and has read through it once. He can clearly make an educated decision whether he wants to be religious or not and argue why with an educated view. I have no respect for the uneducated hate mongers who make statements about Christians (or any religion) and have little or no idea what they are talking about.

I know many, many people who have done this. Upwards of 100, I would estimate. I myself have read the Bible through about 12 times probably, I read it through about 1 and 1/2 times every year.
It's really not that difficult, 4 chapters a day and you finish in less than a year.

The most important books of the bible are in the new testament. A person just beginning to read the bible should start there. It does not have to be read from cover to cover like you would read a novel.

I did it two or three times in English and one time in Chinese. There are plans out there that would help readers to read the whole Bible in one year. But I didn't do it with those plans; I just read one to three chapters a day. I believe I did it in an average of one and a half year.

I have done it before and if you read four chapters a day from Genesis to Revelation it will take you just under a year. Four chapters takes, on average, ten minutes to read.

It took me about 6 months to read it from cover to cover and I know a few other people who have
However most people I talk to have only read parts and some have only read the new Testament. I think that is sad
