mercenaries, are basicly private security forces, and are used in many parts of the nation, there are three or four firms I know of in the US that supply ex military for speical needs if various parts of the world.

There are some use of ex military in special response units here in the US, but basicly for special secuity needs in emergancy, they have been used in LA on some high secuirty areas.

You are recruited

They are basicly doing the same job they did in the military only making a better pay. If I owned a business in a war area, or area that is not secure, I would want the best secuirty I could have.

The US government regularly uses private military forces (mercenaries) to carry out operations in other countries. There are many reasons to be weary military action being waged by private groups and individuals. Though they are acting within the scope of the government's instructions, there is virtually no check on their power. They are not subject to various international conventions (Geneva) and may thus act in ways that are contrary both to US and international law. Because they are being paid for their services and act without loyalty to any particular country, they have incentive to act in less than honorable ways. Additionally, they may be more vulnerable to bribes or being "bought" and may put their own personal financial gain before the interests of the country.

Are they illegal, not unless what the do is illegal;

You can become one pretty easy; all you need is your own equipment and to have a resume with a military background (maybe a police back ground).

They are a necessary evil. I know some companies are hiring them in Iraq right now (called body guards). Pay is good; so is the potential for problems though. Its not a cake walk.

They are called Private Military Companies now. They are legal and often contract to national governments and military.

To join you have to have a reputable military background, unless you join one of the cowboy outfits which are full of ex security guards and nightclub bouncers and then you will end up dead very quickly.

I think they are a good thing as long as they are monitored and regulated.
