I was always under the belief that low blood pressure causes this, but I'm not an expert.

I have it happen all the time, and I do have low blood pressure, but it's not serious.

Drinking more fluids is supposed to raise your blood pressure....so if this is the case, and if low blood pressure causes this reaction when you stand, then I would think drinking more fluids should help!

I'm interested to know for real though, because it feels terrible!

=)

It could be that you're standing up too fast. This makes the blood rush away from your brain and causes dizziness. Low blood pressure can also cause dizzines. I have normal blood pressure but it's on the lower side of normal. I have to be careful standing up because I find I get dizzy like you.

first stand up slowly. Blood pressure may fall when people stand up, creating the dizzy feeling.

How do you keep the room from spinning when you stand up? Christopher Mathias, FMedSci, of Imperial College London, tried a cheap, low-tech solution: water.

Mathias and his colleague, Tim Young, gave participants about 2 cups of distilled water to drink while seated. Fifteen minutes later, participants stood up. Their blood pressure was higher after drinking the water, and their symptoms improved.

Stand up slower... honestly. This happens to most people, as the blood suddenly rushes to a different part of your body and less oxygen is sent to your brain. However, if this happens severely every time you stand up, you could have a physical problem and should consult a doctor. Drinking more water and increasing your fluid intake (soda doesn't count) should also fix this problem.

Don't get up so fast! If you are in a lying down position don't jump to your feet. Sit down first then stand up. If you get dizzy when you sit then stand, then you may want to have your doctor do some blood tests.

When you get up, your blood pressure is dropping. Take your time standing up and if you are getting up from laying down, sit up first for a few seconds before trying to stand. Try increasing your fluid intake, you could be de-hydrated. If it continues, you need to see your doctor for other problems.

Sounds like you're experiencing postural hypotension. It means that your blood pressure drops dramatically when you change position. Ways to stop this: change position slowly. Also check your haemoglobin level or red blood cell count. Most people with postural hypotension have low counts for these two. Take more red meat or iron supplement to increase them.
