I have a DVR box from Cablevision. The reason I got this was because it had an HDMI imput in the back which I could use to connect to my Sony 50" HDTV. When I plugged my HDMI cord into my DVR box and into my tv I got a blank picture. When I plugged the component cords back in, the picture came back. I tried playing with the menu & settings, but there is nothing relevant to my problem. I called Cablevision and each rep I spoke to gave me a different opinion, none of which helped. I feel cheated, since I bought my $2,500 HDTV specifically to use its HDMI imput. Now Cablevision gets in the way and, basically, tells me I have to watch cable tv with component imputs instead of the full glory of HDMI!

Well a few things.
One, about 90% of the cable company boxes are pieces of sh*t. they require the HDMI connection to be "turned-on" by a cable company specialist. WHY? no one knows.

Anyways, if u can get into the settings of the box it should have an option that says output or format. and there it will have upconvert1, 2 and auto HDMI.U wanna leave it on that if u find it. and then make sure ur component cables are disconnected from the cable box.

Now, if thats not the case then ur box is defective and u need to get it swapped out, the newer boxes are ready to go, they r plug n play so as soon as u plug in the HDMI it wil trnasfer signal auto. but u have to make sure comp. video cables r unplugged.

Now the last and really rare issue is that the cable company hasnt updated there HDMI ports. which mean that its a few steps behind ur TV, in terms of Copyright. Again not ur fault, just BS on ur cable provider. In that case ur Sh*t outa luck. and if that is soo get some really good compnenet video cables and u should b good ot go.

Sorry and goodluck.

Mediacom uses Motorola cableboxes (built-in DVR) and there was some setting changes to allow the use of HDMI cables. Were you getting sound without picture with HDMI cables? If so, there is a setting change on the box that can be done to allow full viewing. Call the boxes manufacturer and see if they have an answer.

YES, IT THE CABLE COMPANY. I HAVE TIME/WARNER AND THERE WERE RUMORS THAT THE HDMI ON THEIR HARD DRIVE RECORDER WAS DISCONNECTED.
UNFORTUNATELY THE INTRODUCTION OF HDTV IS PROBABLY THE WORSE THOUGHT OUT PRODUCT EVER!
FROM FORMATS TO CONNECTIONS...NONE OF THE COMPANIES CO-OPERATED WITH EACH OTHER AND WE HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. NOW THE NEW ISSUES ARE 1080i/1080p AND HD-DVD/BLURAY.
