1) They come to the realization that death is not something to be feared, since no amount of fear will prevent death nor even delay it.
2) Having learned to cope with the fear of death, they are less fearful -- perhaps even unafraid -- of any other unknown quantity.
3) They're not concerned with what the neighbors may think of them or their beliefs.

many of my experiences in life so far have lead me to take a more scientific approach to how I was created and why. I am the type of person who mentally stands by the phrase "seeing is believing." I know most people come up with the response "what about the wind? you cant see that." But it's existence can be scientifically prooven, therefore- I know it exists. I am not close-minded to the topic of a higher power at all... The day someone puts scientific facts in front of me beyond reasonable doubt that prove Gods existence then I will gladly admit that I was wrong. But until then, I choose to stick to my current position of not believing.

The number one reason is because there is no credible evidence to support any such belief.

Response to previous comments:

I was a practicing Christian (mostly Baptist) for over 30 years (I'm nearly 60) and when I became an adult, began to study religion and history. The facts do not support the claims. There is no credible evidence that supports the bible stories, including the Jesus myths.

The bible has been altered to support the "Trinity" and there is no credible evidence to support the claim supernatural entities ("Gods") exist.

It has nothing to do with emotion, I am an atheist because the facts do not support God belief.

There is only one reason and that is that the Sovereign God has not given them faith to believe in Him. Jesus said no man could come to Him except the Father draws him. That's it in a nut shell.

My guess would be that the major religions ruined it for them. Now all they can see is an old white guy with a flowing white robe and a long white beard that lives in the sky. Logic tells us that this is impossible. Therefore they can't logically get their minds around God. Myself, I can't say weather there is a God or not.

May I intervine(sp?) for a moment?

If people mind their own business, pay their taxes, don't lie, cheat, eat healthy, love honestly, have a positive outlook on life, love their parents. Respect others. (it's not really all that hard, people)

Who should they really be believing in?

Stay tuned for my real answer.
