Puppies of any size, any breed, no matter how cuddly and sweet grow up to be dogs that will have different temperaments, health issues and needs. Research breeds and find out what each has to offer as well as what each is likely to suffer from as far as health goes and the activity level they require. Match your lifestyle and realistic expectation of being able to pay the vet bills for probable medical conditions as well as grooming needs with a few breeds. Visit with some of these dogs at a breeder's home and at Rescues. Make a decision based on what you *and* the dog needs for the entire lifetime of that animal. All pups are cute and we all love our own dogs but this should be a serious comittment based on much more than what someome tells you is a great breed. It may be great for them and totally wrong for you.

That all depends on the amount of time and money you have to spend on grooming. There are many very nice small dogs out there. Yorkies are beautiful, brave and friendly, but take a lot of grooming. Maltese is the same, also Bichon Frise, Chihuahuas
don't take a lot of grooming, except for the occasional bath, and nail trims, but if mistreated by people (children) they can get very
nippy. Papillons are very nice dogs, so are Cavaliers and they don't take a LOT of grooming.

I have a Yorkie and she's a sweetie...now. When young she was very intense. My fave was my mini Schnauzer...loyal and great personality. I look for breed types that don't shed (terriers, poodle). If you can find your dog at the shelter it would be wonderful. So many need loving homes and in exchange give abundant love. Much luck with your new dog choice.

Most puppies grow to be alot bigger than what they seem to be when they are around 8 wks old. The smallest breeds are Yorkshire Terrier, Teacup Poodles or Maltese. They are normally under 5lbs at full adult weight. Try and get the runt of the litter when you pick one out.

Pekingnese Dogs are especially cute and smell, and they don't require much maintenance unless they are purebred. So you could get a mix, for example, pomeranian and pekingnese mix, or something like that. They'll stay small, only grow a little.

Yorkies, Chihuahuas, Malteses, Pugs, and lots more. It just really depends on if you want a dog with long fur or with short fur. If you get a dog with long fur, you have to take them to a groomer every 6 weeks to get groomed. Short haired dogs dont have to go to the groomers.

Contact a small breed rescue in your area through petfinder.com

Rescue one until there's none!

Don't breed or buy while shelter dogs die!

Nothing beats a mini-dachshund. I have had several of them, and they are just about the best little guys around. They are loyal and very protective...great watch dogs! And very cute, too.
