Mark W has the right answer and the reason the marines train with the Rangers is that by comparison to the other services, the Marine Corps is much smaller. Most of their technical, specialty schools are with the other services. I was a marine tank commander and went to Army Tank school then became an Air Traffic Controller through the Navy School. PrincessFrog was basically incorrect about it not being a separate branch. Although, it falls under the Dept of the Navy, Only the Secretary of the Navy falls into their chain of command. The Marine Corps has its own seat at the Joint Chiefs of Staff which the current Chairman is a Marine General.

REBELCAT was close, they are equal to Navy SEALS and Army Rangers. They actually have to graduate from Army Ranger School to become Force Recon (which is why the Marines have instructors there). They must also pass the Army's Airborne school and Army's Air Assault School. If you want to be one of them, go in the Army and become a Ranger (there are more slots and the same schools--interesting that the best Marines are really Army Rangers).

Above the Rangers, SEALS and Force Recon are the Army's Special Forces--the Green Berets. After that is Delta, which only exists in Hollywood ;)

The Marines have a team for recon called USMC Force Reconnassance(Force Recon.) They are reconized as Special Operations of The Marine Corps & are reconized as High Risks Ops.
They are an analogue to the >Navy Seals, Air Force Comandos & the U.S. Army Special Forces.
They are therefore a UNIT used by all BRANCHES of the Military for their SPECIAL SKILLS.
Hope this helps you....REBELCAT.

FROGPRINCESS_61,
FYI the US Marines are a seperate branch of the military. They are closly attached to the Navy because the Marines are capable amphibious deployment.
They can be inserted to a region of conflict via air, land or sea. For naval type deployment the Marines are on stand-by aboard naval ships which allows troops and equipment to be inserted by helicopters or amphibious landing vehicles. This type is known as rapid deployment giving them a quicker time and easier accessibility to land and occupy a region of conflict.
Here are the branches of the US Military:
US ARMY
US NAVY
US MARINES
USAF (AIRFORCE)
US COAST GUARD
