20+ years in NYC & not mugged yet! (knocking on head)

Wear whatever you like, nobody will care, it's not like you're going to a job interview. Do check the weather report because it's all over the place; flip-flops are ok, but if it's raining your muddy slippery toes won't thank you. You'll be walking more than you ever have, so whatever you wear it better be comfy, it's marathon time.

Safety? Use your head. Common sense rules. If you flash your $, you're a target anywhere. Ditto if you look lost or decide to roam dark alleys at 3am. Look at a map, find out where you want to go & stick to that. Most tourists stay in Manhattan & it's just not possible to get lost here. Streets downtown are usually not numbered, but if you keep walking, sooner or later you'll either hit a # or a river. ;-)

Regardless of old reputations, we've been found to be among the most friendly & polite in the world (ain't that a hoot?), so ask locals for advice. There's cops all over if you don't trust anyone else. Just be prepared for some (polite) eye-rolling if you just wander slowly in the middle of the always-in-a-rush crowd. Take one of the many open-decked bus tours, you can pay for the day & get on/off in several places, unlimited times, see the rest of the city from above while a tour guide points out nice things & gives you details. Don't miss South Street Seaport!

Oh, one important note: NEVER CROSS THE STREET WITHOUT LOOKING! I'm not joking. It doesn't matter if the whole crowd starts moving, ok? The suicidal sheep mentality is rampant here & if one oblivious moron starts moving, they all follow, regardless if the light has changed or not! I'm always astonished there's not thousands of deaths daily, but we also have great drivers (mostly). Have a great trip.

PS: Fake designer bags are not as cheap as you think & the quality really sucks! For the same $, you can probably buy something decent & durable, even if it's not a designer label.

The great thing about New York is that you can wear whatever you want. Over the course of a day, you will be sure to see someone dressed similarly. How you dress depends on what you want to do. If you will be going to the Park, the Village or SoHo, ultra casual like flip flops, capris or jeans is fine. If you will be going to museums and galleries, you might want dressier flat sandals and a sundress. If you pack a few different looks in colors that coordinate, you can dress for any occasion. Just don't wear heels to walk around, the locals generally don't, you'll stand out & the muggers know you can't run in those things anyway (although the street crime rate is way down from what it was years ago). Just stay on streets with lots of people, and you should be perfectly safe.

Currently New York is humid not really hot but humid it has been raining alot then more humid.

As for muggers that is mostly a myth most violence is random stabbings and slashings but crime is low. Avoid groups of teenagers and the homeless.

Canal street is great for every type of knock offs but all over the city you can find good quality rip-offs just don't accept the first price.

For cheap real bags try Century 21 across the World Trade Center Site.

Well it certainly depends on what you are going to do during your time in New York City. If you are going to sight-see, then my best advice to you is wear the most comfortable shoes possible. If you are going to places like the theater, then it would nice to wear something appropriate such as nice pair of trousers, jeans that you can dress up or down, and nice summer dress because it gets hot in the summer. As for the muggers, carry a purse that is closed to reduce any chance of any person sticking his/her inside your bag. Don't do anything that will draw attention to yourself and make you seem like a tourist.

depends on when you are coming. If you are here in the summer then shorts and tees are fine for walking around. Flip FLops and Sneakers are good for walking around - You will no doubtedly do a lot of walking so sneakers may be better than flip flops, but you should still bring them. As in any city-you should keep your purse/wallet close and make sure you have one that zips. Never walk alone and look like you know where you are going. It happens here as often as in any city-If you are in populated and touristy areas you won't have a problem. I never have and I'vebeen here for 8 years!

I've been here for years and never have been mugged.

I am a man, so I cannot recommend any specific footwear except flipflops/poor comfort shoes will leave you w blisters after ~ 1 hour of walking.
And use common sense @ night (eg stay in populated areas, don't flash $$$ or valuable things to everyone, appear like you know where you are going etc).

Flip flops would be fine - check weather.com for information about cold or hot weather and bring what you are comfortable in.
