Ask your pediatrician about products that you can buy OTC, something that has a bitter taste would probably work? Also, you have to be careful of allergic reactions to anything you place on the babies skin or in the mouth. How old is your baby? It is important to stop that habit and the pacifier before the child gets his/her permanent centrals (front teeth) due to deformity of the palatal tissues during the eruption of the teeth. Good luck that's a hard habit to break unless you have major patience. Past the age of 2 is not good for a child to suck on thumb or pacifier and definitely should be breaking the bottle by then.

I was a thumb sucker so I can answer this from experience. My mother took my thumb out of my mouth when I was sleeping. But, of course that didn't work because the next night it was back in my mouth. Then she tried putting things on my thumb to make me not want to suck it. But, of course a child can always wash it off when you are not looking. And that really just keeps the child up because they start trying to suck it off. Now I have a tongue cradle in my mouth and I haven't sucked my thumb in like 3 years. but so you know if the child is still an infant it is actually good for them to suck their thumb but when they are let's say 6 or 7 and above its time to break the habit.

You dont need to. The problem with thumb sucking is when the child's teeth come out. Because the thumb pushes the front teeth forward and messes up the alignment of the teeth causing the need for braces later. When the child gets teeth then start using lemon and bitter tasting thumb stuff on their thumb.

it depends on how old they are. it is a comfort device but it can lead to very pain and expensive dental problems later. I was a thumb sucker and my parents tried everything. I didn't stop until I got my first retainer and it cut my thumb when i tried to suck it. 8 years of braces and neither of my children got pacifiers. Talk to your pediatrician they can let you know the best way to stop it and if you should worry just yet.

There's this stuff in the cosmetic section by all of the fingernail polish called "Stop the Bite". It's supposed to be for chronic nail biters. I am using it to try to stop chewing on my nails. Let me tell you, it tastes awful! I either need to spit or get something to drink, PRONTO! If that won't stop your baby from sucking on his or her thumb, nothing will except for maybe jalapeno juice!

LEAVE THE BABY ALONE!!! Keyword "Baby". Let the baby comfort itself. If it persists until age 6 or 7 then you have to be concerned.
