There's a great place in Brooklyn - it's a rooftop Mexican place called Alna. You can take the F train to Carroll street (or Bergen) and walk to Columbia st. (you have to cross the BQE) - due west. The restaurant is probably a 10 minute walk from the subway station, and it's close to the water- so when you get to the top of it - the rooftop deck - the view of Manhattan is fantastic! It's also not too pricey, and the food is GOOD.

You must go to Foley's Fish House in the Renaissance Hotel in Times Square. It is directly across from the area where the ball drops on New years Eve. a 180 degree view through large windows.. wonderful selection of food. Top quality with great service!!!!

Across the Brooklyn Bridge, on the Brooklyn side, there is an Italian restauraunt right on the water, it looks like it's straight out of the Sopranos. They have garden seating with downtown view. Unfortunately I don't remember the name...
