Its a common problem in the long backed short legged breed, I have seven of those sweet lil fur babies. But it seems every breed has their problems and I would not let that keep me from enjoying the love of this breed, Read up on doxie back injuries, there is a wealth of information and support on the web. My lil male has problems beginning at age 3. But he is still a feisty one!

You should not let them jump on or off anything. I have one of those plastic step stools next to the couches for my dachshund. Keep 'em healthy and don't let them get over weight! (this is a huge problem for dachshunds) If you have to carry him make sure to support the front and back. Don't have any info on slipped discs but you should talk to your vet

Dachshunds, because of the length of their spine in proportion to the rest of their body, don't get enough support everywhere they need, and this makes them especially prone to slipped discs.

I have 4 mini dachshunds and I know that due to their length they need not to jump on or off of high places (bed, couch, steps) to prevent injuries and slipped disks. Genetics.....don't believe so. Believe it can be prevented.
