I dont think it is something we learn; it is something we observe...I work hard on teaching my son (5yr) to appreciate everything and that everyone is different....he knows that his friends come in all different shapes, sizes, colors, and with different abilities...but i also notice him think things once in a while like "that person was fat".

If all society tried; we would live in a beautiful world...but reality is...that we have observed that we "should" like a certain thing b/c of history (slavery and extremist groups like KKK) and today our culture is based on tv, internet, games ect that focus on advertising the "tall dark handsome or slim tall blond and beautiful"

People observe these things and history tells us if you say it often enough and with enough conviction you will believe it....So we observe others and media and eventually think that people are either beautiful or ugly...

But really beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

From the media and society, and from influences from others. A person can't really be ugly unless they are ugly from within. If someone finds someone else unattractive that does not make them ugly. Boys have called me ugly but in fact if I'm ugly then why have handsome guys shown interest in me. Appearances seem to revolve around the 'perfect/ ideal person'. Everyone is supposed to look like a barbie or a ken doll. Honestly, I don't care what one looks like, if you're beautiful on the inside then you're beautiful on the outside.
