Years ago I remember reading of a study that Ketoprofin was the most effective pain reliever for dental pain. The brand name I used to use is Orudis KT. I haven't been able to find it in the last year, but it may still be around.

It is not easy to find, but there is an otc pain reliever named Vanquish. Discovered it after a botched root canal. Was the only thing that actually killed the pain, and won my eternal gratitude.
