The only person who needs to know about this procedure is your Doctor who'll be doing the surgery. Make sure HE knows about it!

my cousin had hers out because it ruptured in a car accident, she was sore for a few days after the surgery but has been fine ever since. she has a scar down the middle of her stomach (it curves around her belly button) but that's the only lasting effect. the spleen is used to filter blood but there are other organs and structures in the body that take over for the spleen if it is no longer able to function or not there so everything will still function normally - hope the surgery goes well for ya!

My husband had his removed about 35 years ago. He is fine. Make sure you ask your doctors about important effects: for example, my husband cannot get a live vaccine. This is important if you would like to travel to places where that would be necessary. Apparently smallpox vaccine is live, and I think typhoid. He also was told to get a pneumococcus vaccine every ten (I think) years. The important thing to do is have the fact that you are ASPLENIC in your wallet (a medic alert bracelet is even better), and make sure all our your health providers know - even your dentist! Other than that, he is fine. Actually, he is healthier than I am and I have all my organs!

I ruptured my spleen playing football, and it had to be removed, you just end up catching colds easier. After a long time healing..

well if you are getting a spleen transplant sure but you can live without it and all they do is cut you open and carefully remove it and don't drink a lot of alcohol because your spleen helps your liver filter your blood
