Passports can take anywhere from a couple of days (if you're willing to pay for the expidited service) to ~ 2 months. Take your medications, health insurance cards, allergy/health info, contact information, and then, of course whatever essentials you will need for the duration. Oh, and don't forget the child. Have fun.

In addition to your passports, you will need a visa/travel permit if you are going beyond 25 miles of the border. Contact the Mexican consulate or embassy.

Bring photocopies of the passports and leave photocopies in an obvious place at home so they can be faxed to you (via a hotel or something) if you lose the copies you brought. This way, you can get new passports if yours are lost/stolen.
