I am taking a babysitting Red cross program tomorrow that goes all week at my school. It is an hour and a half a day. The rest of the day I am helping out at my camp's infant todler center and the little kids camp which goes up to second grade.

After I complete this I become certified and want to start babysitting. My neighbor has a little girl about five. How much should I charge this family an hour? I wouldn't babysit that often. I live in MA if it makes a difference.

Is there anything I will need to know that the course doesn't cover?

The daycare I work at charges $17 a day for infants and toddlers, but that would be too much for you to do it in your home. For you, $10-$15 would be more like it, depending on how many days a week you will be babysitting! Don't charge by the hour, charge by the day. For a five year-old you may want to stick to the $10 a day.

If you're babysitting in 8 hour shifts, you will need to include meals and a snack. Also, look up websites that show you crafts you and the child can do! The parents will be very happy, if they know you are really spending quality time with their child, and they will probably tell their friends about you, getting you more work! And for the future, those parents will be very good references for you!

Make sure the course covers infant CPR if not you can find free courses in this easily. You may want to go through the state Dept human resources as a child care provider for the state especially when you become certified. There is a shortage of babysitters.... Choose the amount you think is fair every person is differnt if its by the week set a privce byt he hour Id say 8 to 10 a hour is fair.. However i charge what I think they can afford...

well i babysit kids of all ages and i charge depending on what you have to do for the child and what you have to supply whether your at their home or yours you know stuff like that! i babysit when needed not on a schedule so i charge by the day. ex if im baby sitting a child over night thats automatically no less than 20 because it deprives you of sleep and you might have to feed them again. if i get them earlier than 8 then they get a evening charge of 10 more dollars which is very reasonable i have never had a customer complain of the prices so...........

discuss it with the person whom you are sitting for. Minimum wage is 5.50 or something close to that. Use that and add a few dollars because you can work anywhere for that. 8.50-11.00 is good. Do not make it too high but stress to them that you have your certification. Also find out what daycares in your area are charging for the same amount of time. Call around-it is pretty high I guarentee that! This will give you more power to bargain when negotiating your salary!

As for the pay thing, when I was a teenager I would charge $1 an hour per kid. But I had a lot more kids and I just did it for fun, not money. Now I pay a sitter $2.50 an hour. That's minimum wage for a child. I hope that helps!

Find out how much others are charging /paying for babysitting in your area. The RC certification shouldn't really matter b/c everyone who is dealing with young children should be certified for the child's safety as well as their own protection.

I think it is actually up to them how much they pay you, and you just have to accept what they give you or else it would seem kind of rude.
