Personally, I am not very religious at all, but I choose not to label myself with a title such as "atheist". However, I have noticed that people who do consider themselves atheist are looked down upon by society.
For instance, if a Christian were to stand on a stage and say how much he loves God, the people would think he is a wonderful man.
However, if an atheist man were to go on that same stage and say "I don't believe in god," he would be completely shunned by the crowd and thought of as a terrible person.

How can this behavior be tolerated in a society where people are free to believe or worship whatever they like? People really need to become more acceptant of other people's beliefs.

If I were to ask any young person (below college level, let's assume) whether or not they believed in god, more often than not I would be answered with a quick "YES!" even if it is not true.
I'm running out of letters to type with so I'll end it here.

Thoughts?

I think the biggest problem is that there are a minority of atheists who loudly shout to the world that they hate Christianity and like to debunk it. It's those atheists that give the rest a bad name. Most are just as kind and moral as any other person, they just don't need a religion to fulfill themselves.
And it's a problem in a world dominated by the religious right. Whatever happened to tolerance and understanding? Right out the window. It's like Christians will accept you as long as you are one of them.
Being an atheist doesn't make you a bad person. And just because you don't believe in a god or higher power doesn't mean you are going to do evil. There are some Christians that believe in a god and do evil. So really what does it matter what religion you are? Or if you have one at all?
I'm worried about what's happening in this country. The religious right (those Christian zealots that give the rest of the Christians a bad name) are taking over the sanity and reasoning of this country. I hate that the politicians and government are so heavily involved in religion. Isn't this country supposed to be founded on the idea that religion and state are to be separate? Our nation's leaders need to make decisions based on logic and reasoning, not emotions. And religion would be considered an emotion. When you think about your religion, you feel. You feel hope, faith, love, or whatever. And we all know that emotions are the opposite of logic.

I don't know when did it started in the history of mankind. But I think Atheism became a taboo in our society because it's a belief that we are existing as human beings without a purpose and just an accident "thing" that happened here on earth. If you believe that your life has meaning then you almost believe that there is a higher being that created you because you have a role to play here on earth. Maybe being an Atheist is your role, and that challenges God-believers to show you that God exist. Ever wonder why you are here? What's your purpose and why you're an atheist instead of being a christian,a jew, a muslim, or a buddhist? But I guess whatever is our opinion we deserve to be respected. Atheism exist because we are diverse and I respect you for whatever you stand for. There is always a thin line between the norm and what is not. I hope you can cross the line with a proud heart (wink*wink*)

A christian wood be run off and an atheist commended for smashing GOD. We christians are the least respected people in the US and in the world today. I the US alone christians are being killed for there beliefs. You dont hear about it becasue the News dont care. There are only 33% that are christians that have truly given there soul to christ. That is sad. It just shows how much of a Soddom and gamorrah we live in.

Maybe because no one have really met a nice true atheist. Probably because some of the atheist on this site have given true atheist a bad name. I've met a true atheist that explained to me that they have never heard of religion and have no understanding of God period but yet willing to listen to what my beliefs were and wasn't quickly to denounce my beliefs. In this section, they are rude and hateful. They say that they hate Christians and Christianity. They say that their are open-minded but as soon as you back up what you say they will accuse you of converting or forcing ur beliefs on this. They constantly try to find holes in the bible and call names! God bless the atheists! How Sad.

This is not new.
Atheists are "evil" and Christians are "holy". It's just that's what the majority of people think, so it spreads like wildfire.
Atheists are not respected at all (and I'm an atheist by the way, so I know first hand), you have to work so much harder for respect if people know that little detail about you.
It's just that's the way it is, at least for now, you just have to work around it. I've learned how to do that and it's not always enjoyable.

In the beginning of christianity people were murdered for challenging the doctrine of the church. The north American Indians were called pagans and savages for they followed something other than chrisitan perspective. the christian prejudice has been absorbed through out history and society. It's just a matter of time before the tables will be turned. When christians will be the pariah of society... laws of karma.. what goes around comes around.

I agree that there's a bit too much encouragement toward libertinage in our society. I also do tend to draw the line at demanding other people follow one's own morals; and so I don't think it's appropriate to ban porn or sex, as long as its not being forced upon me. (Admittedly, I do think, in that vein, there needs to be some kind of standard of etiquette developed about propositioning people you don't know very well, or even who you do know...) In the example you give of porn addiction troubles, I wouldn't think it right demand a spouse or loved one stop watching porn just because I myself might object to it, any more than it would be appropriate to tell them how they need to vote or what religion they should be. If the person I married suddenly changed religions I do understand how that might have a negative effect on the marriage in some cases, but I wouldn't call it proper to demand they change it.

Atheists are often obnoxious in their disbelief and they are insulting. How else would someone react if something they hold so dear is attacked? Personally, I don't care whether or not they believe but it's not necessary to mock believers merely because they hold a view that's different. So, believers are often defensive. They are human after all.

Atheists are looked down upon along with a lot of other religous groups other than Christians because they are the minority. Each group feels that they're beliefs are right and everyone else is wrong.
