I want to know what you think came first and why you think it came first. I am MORE INTERESTED in the why then the what. Answers without the why will not be considered for best answer.

I forget which of you said that it would be like an ape giving birth to a human. We have been able to scientifically prove that there was one type of ape like primate before the current ape and man now. Depending on the region, the primate adapted and one groupd grew into something like the ape and the other was something like a man. Through adaption we got what we have now. Basic Biology, folks. As far as my answer to my own question- the chicken came first- God created the winged bird. I am assuming that God thought to put one male and one female of each so you would end up with the male fertilizing the egg and the female bearing it. Scientifically it is not possible for an egg to hatch without incubation, so the mother would have to have laid on it.

It's really a question of whether you are a Creationist (chicken first) or Naturalist/Darwinist (egg first).

If you believe there was a Creator like I do, I am Christian, then you believe God created all the animals and therefore two Chickens or more had to be created to create the first egg.

If you are a Naturalist, someone who ascribes to the Theory of Evolution, then you believe some previous animal, not a chicken but very close laid an egg that became the first chicken.

Similarly, one could say the same between a man and a baby. If you believe in Creation then you believe God made a man (at least of the age of comprehension to name the animals) if you are a Naturalist you believe some ape-man had a baby that grew to be the first man.

I've been waiting for this question to come along!! I love this question. Over the years my opinion has changed. But, this is my final conclusion.....
As we know from science class, an egg must be incubated to be hatched, it must be kept warm or it will not live. I do not believe the case has ever been any different. So, if the egg was first, there was not a chicken sitting on top of it, keeping it warm so that it could hatch. 'God created... every winged bird, according to its kind.' I think the chicken was first and then layed the egg.

If you believe animals mutate and the "strong" survive then the egg came first. Two birds, other than chickens, had a defect in their DNA causing the birth of a mutation from the original bird. That mutation was the first chicken. From that point on the chicken laid eggs of new chickens.

If you believe God created chickens then the question is did he create a fully developed chicken or an egg. If it was an egg what kept it warm while it developed in the egg?

The egg because of the process of evolution. The first modern chicken had to hatch from something. It didn't hatch and then later mutate. Gene mutations (evolution) happen slowly over generations, and they happen pretty much at the moment of fertilization. So an animal just before the modern chicken (the chicken as we know it today) layed an egg that hatched into a modern chicken. The animal before the chicken would obviously be ridiculously close to the chicken, possibly vissibly identical, but the genetics ever so slightly different.

The chicken came first because the egg was laid by the chicken. God created all the different animals & gave them the ability to reproduce. Of course without the Rooster the egg is dead. And its fertilized by the Rooster while developing in the Hen. The female chicken.

The Chicken Came First.

Oh I know this one it's the egg.
Put simply, the reason is down to the fact that genetic material does not change during an animal's life.

Therefore the first bird that evolved into what we would call a chicken, probably in prehistoric times, must have first existed as an embryo inside an egg.

The chicken had to get laid before the egg could be, so the chicken came first.

Of course the chicken came first, for the same reason that Adam and Eve came before Abel and Cain. God first made the animals and then they reproduced. Logical really!
