Go to your local shelter/s and walk through the dogs. Choose several that appeal to you, and ask to spend some time with each of them (most shelters have an exercise area and/or a room for this purpose). Ask the shelter workers about the dogs personality. Ask what breed/s the dog likely is, then go home and read all you can on those breeds to get an idea of the general breed/s characteristics.
Visit the dog/s again, see how they respond to you on the second or third visit. By this time you will probably be having a favorite, one that is starting to feel like it belongs with you. Learn all you can ahead of time, make an informed choice (you want a dog that suits your own lifestyle and personality). Also learn all you can about taking care of a dog, training, etc.
Once you have adopted the dog, and taken it home, invest in a training class that you do with your dog. You will find it beneficial to you both, as well as the bonding process.
Good luck and happy fur-baby parenting!

Absolutely get a shelter dog! And yes, there are labs and dobies in there! Not only that, you may even get a discount on your vet bills because your dog is from the shelter. They can explain better than I about how that works.
Personally, I don't care for dobermans: Most of the ones I've met are vicious things. But it's not all their fault: Part of it is how the families taught them too. I even remember one doberman who was a sweet-natured gal.
Whichever you get, may you enjoy a long life together!

I agree that a shelter dog is the best way go. As far as the breed you should consider who will spend time with the dog (children, elderly, cats, or a household with lots of people coming and going?) and be sure to get a dog known to have a friendly disposition especially if. Also, how much time will they spend alone? Some dogs do well with alone time, others can be destructive or get depressed with your absence. And what kind of exercise can you provide? Big dogs need lots of running and aren't the best candidates for strictly leashed-potty walks. Remember, smaller dogs also have small bladders! And all of these kinds of dogs can be found at shelters so please check there first!
Good luck and thank you for considering pet adoption!

Adopt from the humane society or local shelter. The dogs know that you've saved them and are so appreciative. Plus you get the satisfaction of knowing you saved an innocent life rather than just pay for a dog.

A shelter dog, which could be either of the 2. It's much better, they know that you saved it and will be so much happier, and there'll be a better chance that it won't run away because it loves you so much. It also costs 4/5ths less than one from a shop, and there can be rare breeds in shelters, you just don't know it.

It depends on where you live. Labs require LOTS AND LOTS of exercise, trust me, I know. Dobe's are not, well, the friendless dogs, no offense to them, but I would rescue a dogs life at the shleter if I were you. There are Labs at the shleter, and lab mix, and Dobe's mix, Labs are very friendley, but think, a shleter dog has already been fixed, all it shots, and has been tested for aggresion, and how it does with other people. Both are big dogs, but at the shelter you'll have a variety of dogs to choose from.
BEST OF LUCK

I'm partial to the labs because I've had two- both were adopted. Labs are just big balls of love! Definitely go for a shelter dog! You'll probably be able to find a lab in a shelter close to you. To search for adoptable dogs in your area go to: http://www.petfinder.com

A dog from a shelter!!!!! There are thousands and thousands in this country that need good homes! Please adopt your next pet! For every one human baby born in this country, there are ten dogs and cats born - there's not nearly enough homes for all of them; so don't pay someone to keep breeding more, adopt one!!!!!
