We have a 1-1/2 y/o Newfoundland. She is a wonderful dog but if she gets out w/o a leach on, she's gone. To her it is this huge game to run from us. This goes on for about 45 minutes then she decides that she's done and will come to us. Last week she got out in the dark, she's black, so I couldn't find her. She came home after an hour. I'm worried that she will get hit, someone will take her, etc. In the house and the backyard she comes, listens to her name but not when she gets free.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep her from running? I think she has a pretty good life here so I don't think she's going to look for another home LOL

We have a fenced yard. This is her sneaking out the front door when its opened. For example when the kids come to the house, bringing in groceries, etc.

When we have her out front on a lease she doesn't pull or try to take off. Its when she knows that she's not restrained is when she takes off. Almost like the door of oppurtunity opens and she walks out of it.

You go to obedience class and she learns how to come when called. You have encouraged this behavior and now she in only doing what she was taught!!! She needs to be retaught!!!!
You need to learn how to keep the dog from getting out without a leash!!!!!!!!!!! It really is not that hard!!!!!!!

Chaining a dog it is said, makes them mean. I would by a dog lot, that is what we had to do. Spot and ginger are fox terrier mix and we had to buy a lot for them, spot of course found a way to get out and got hit by a car. But, i would get a lot, for a newfoundland, (they are sooooo cute, like, longhaired labs) a 10 by 10 lot. She should not jump it if she does not know she can, I hope she does not get hit and good luck with it.
GOOD LUCK

if she starts to run off (like, you see her near the door), don't chase after her. that'll make her think, time to play! look serious, and don't give a nice voice. or you can have her fave treat and when she's about to go, put a trail of them to somewhere safe, and close the door. make sure she has a collar, and maybe you should just leave the leash on her. I hope these tips help, I hope she doesn't get hurt or taken!

Try being more careful with letting her run out. do you have a fence or an electric one? an electric one might be good.
