There is a verse in teh Quran [1:654] that tells a story about god who prohibted people (Jews) from working on Saturday and when some of them tried to hunt whales on Saturday, god punished them by switching their bodies into monkies!

If the Quran tells that Saturday was a holy day, why don't Muslims celebrate it anymore?

Actually Friday is our holy day. and the story refers to the Children of Israel, who when they were given the torah, they were told not to work on the sabbath.

however, that was specific to the children of Israel, and so we as Muslims have friday as our holy day.

wallahu alem (and Allah knows best)

Because the Saturday Sabbath (actually, it's from just before sundown of Friday until after dark when 3 stars are visible on Saturday night) was given specifically to Jews -- so much so, that keeping the Sabbath is a major hallmark of a religious Jew even to this day. It was never required of non-Jews to keep the Sabbath. (This does not preclude having a secular day off. You don't have ot work 7 days a week, but neither do you have to observe the same Sabbath that Jews do.)

I do not know the Qu'ran so I can't say if the story you cite is really in there, but there is a Jewish FOLK TALE about men being turned into monkeys. however, I do not remember anything about hunting whales. Jews generally do not hunt.

Uh, your Surah doesn't exist. Surah 1 has only 7 verses, not 654. Can you copy and paste the verse, so I can make more sense of your question. I'm Muslim and I've never heard of Saturday being a "holy day." We do not have holy days, we have obligatory congregation prayer on Friday called Jummah.

I read the verse, and it says nothing about "switching their bodies into monkeys." Also, If it was prohibited for Jews, that does not mean it would apply to Muslims. After all, Judiasm and Islam are different religions. And how did you mistake 1:654 for 2:65??

Jews are supposed to be stoned for working on the Sabbath and Christians aren't allowed to either. Why don't these groups observe the Sabbath anymore?

It is forbidden for Jews to work on Saturday, because it is the Sabbath ( which does start on Friday afternoon), but it is not forbidden for Muslims to work on Saturday.
