when weight lifting, how exatcly do you wrap the wrist straps and what is the purpose

The purpose is to lift heavier weights then you normally can without the straps. Grip muscles don't get as much workout in your daily life as other muscle do. When people exercise with weights, they rarely work grip muscles directly.
Therefore, often the grip is the weakest link when handling weights, because muscles responsible for it are small and it is not easy to develop them.

My recommendation is not to use straps, because it is to your benefit to develop your grip. It could also be dangerous, because your body is not used to handling that extra weight you can lift using the straps. Straps have their place in weight lifting, but they are better suited for experienced and developed lifters.

It's pretty close to impossible to show you how to wrap straps in a forum where answers can be only text. Try googling to look for pictures or do what I did, ask other lifters in the gym.

I did it so I could lift or pull heavier weights than my wrists would otherwise handle. That way I could challenge my back muscles better.

I have been researching this issue for awhile. Even though this answer is 9 years old it always Googles at the top. Might as well correct the horrible recommendation.

You get straps to lift heavier. Your back will develop faster than your grip ever will. There are POWERLIFTERS who will use straps nearly all the time when training! 1) Constantly stressing your grip (doing deads;romanian deads, barbell shrugs) will do damage to your CNS. 2) Again your back develops faster than your grip which will NEVER be as strong! When training your pulling heavy weights for multiple reps! At competition it's ONE rep. So the top competitors do grip specific training, but use straps when they deadlift. If you have an issue with my statement, please find Matt Kroc and Dorian Yates and tell them how wrong they are!

so that when you deadlift you don't benmd your wrist too sharply holding too much weight...can cause life-long problems and pain if you pull it out too far...
