They pack up your food and make sure everything is right. They try to give quality service and you should tip for that.
I work in a reseraunt where to-go food is offered. I think it is a common belief among people that if I don't bring the food to the car, then they shouldn't have to tip me. And I have had some people actually rush out of the car and into the building I guess b/c they think they won't have to tip if I don't bring it to the car. But in all reality, bringing the food out is the easiest part.
I take their order, ring it in, make sure it is correct, grab anything extra that is requested and package it all up. This is of course happening when I have about 15 other orders I have to take care of, it can be confusing and difficult at times. Plus, I only get paid $3.16 an hour.
Sorry for the life story, but I feel people who have never worked in the industry don't understand what goes on behind the scenes. It is trying work and it does get frustrating when you don't get tipped (and you did everything perfectly) all b/c the person thought that by coming into the building, they would save a few bucks. *shakes head*

I don't know about pizza and Chinese, but I do know that when you are getting take-out from a casual dining resteraunt (EX: Chilis, Applebees, O'Charleys) you should always tip your to-go server. At the resteraunt I work for, we depend on our tips. We only make $2.13 an hour. I think people don't realize that. I give better service and more extras to the people who tip me. Plus, I'm not tempted to spit in their food.
I'm just kidding, I would never do that. But some people might.

Typically, I'd say no. But, if the person who's bringing out your order goes above and beyond what's necessary, then I'd slip them a few bucks. There was one lady at a japanese place I used to order from and she was the only one in the place who would actually double check your order to make sure it was right. There were a few times when she would take it back and start yelling at the kitchen because they had given me the wrong rice. I always tipped her, but no one else there. They just took my money and handed me a bad.

If the restaurant is a casual or fine dining establishment tippin should be done because the server is still taxed for ringing up that food. I have worked in the restuarant business for 15 years.

I dont. If I was sitting down at the place and they were serving me, then I would tip for their service. However, all Im getting is the food...no service and no delivery...I used my own time and my own car...so no tip. All they are giving me is food, which is what Im paying for...only pay for what you actually get.

Absolutely! The waitstaff does more work to pack up your food for carry out than if you were sitting in the restaurant. Plus waitstaff receive very little pay and mostly work for tips.

tipping is generally not required at those kinds of places. The line is there by default. if there's a tip jar, and others are tipping, u can tip if you r treated well

if you go to a chinese place or subway, they make your sandwich or pack your take out, although it's their job to do it, any tip like even a buck is much appreciated it. But if your hostess is the one who took your order, packed your order and is also your cashier and if you are a regular and the hostess remembers you it's always nice to leave them a tip.
