What is the best charity? Dollar-For-Dollar?

Hi,

I just had my birthday and I'm looking to give some of my money away to charity, but I want it to have the largest effect possible.

What in your opinion, are the best charities?

And are there any charties offerign a dollar-for-dollar match on donations?

If you just want do do the easiest contribution contact your local United Way. United Way audits local non-profit companies to insure they are financial sound and use the funds they receive for the cause they say they are assisting. You can direct the United Way where to use your donation, or you can exclude areas. (Like drug abuse, children, medical needs, etc.)

The hard way is to first think about your wishes. First is there an issue you are concerned about. (IE. hunger, children, etc.) Second is it important to help people in your community or across the globe. Then be prepared to spend time visiting, researching, and talking to people. Be sure to get financial statements. If they "dodge" your request don't give them any money. Try to check with companies that have contact with the non-profit for business relations. (IE. Banks, Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Bureau, etc.)

Be careful there are many good causes to help but you need to be sure the people you give your money to will not waste it.

Smile Train. It costs $250 for each kid to have a cosmetic surgery to fix their clipped lips. You let them smile again, you change their live forever. It's like you donate $250 everytime he/;she smile again. Go online to see. If you are short to $250, let me know, I will donate the balance to make your $250.
