Dogs don't use their tail's for balance, they have four legs. But they do use them for communication, and they do this because animals don't use words to speak to each other they use body language. So it's not just the tail that passes on this information but the whole body, from the ears to the tilt of the head all the way down to it's wagging tail.

the tail is used for one thing and one thing only to telll or show other dogs things
