At 4 yrs in must be kept simple. Finger nails are a special form of hair. They protect the tips of the fingers from cuts.

Tell him it's because he used to be a monkey and he needed them to peel bananas.
He'll love it. Might get you in trouble if the parents are super religious, but hey, then you won't have to deal with your pain in the a** cousin anymore.
