You 'discreetly' inform the store manager or owner. They are not in the business of selling maggots. They will take charge and inform other stores also. All packages will be pulled, not just those in the one particular store. From there, the distributors, back to the plant where the product was made will be notified and they will in turn, pull products. You don't run off to a frickin' lawyer and collect easy money. I'd also be asking myself how it is possible for the maggots to have survived being package for so long. They have died because of lack of oxygen...then too, if they did survive that, you'd have thought they'd have hatched by the time you opened the envelopes. 'Course, the packaging could have holes in it...just like this story.

If you keep the jars sealed, then I think you have the same problem I had. It turned out to be larvae in the sealed bags of rice I bought from Safeway. They took the bags back but I lost the bag I opened and had left sealed for about a month on a shelf. Check your packages carefully before opening (perhaps change brand names), and when pouring into jars. Make sure the jars are sterile (through a hot cycle in dishwasher with soap) to kill off any eggs that may be hitching a ride on the glass or the lid. Maybe you have an open window nearby and the bugs are so small they get in through the screen and into the jars when you're putting fresh food in them or if you leave the lids off while cooking? There are many possibilities. It's horrible to open it up and you find all these beetles and larvae looking at you and wriggling around. Not to mention then what to have with supper! Good luck!

If you still have the box with the UPC code, call the company and tell them your problem. They will help you and sometimes send you coupons so you don't stir away from their business. You can also take the box with what is leftover to the store where you bought them, tell them what happen. If you have the receipt with you it will help the most. The most they will do is give you a refund. For future purchases check the expiration date or if the box is damage. Sorry to hear you had such a nasty experience.

First thing first get to a doctor ASAP!!! Then get a camcorder an document the evidence. Next round up your witnesses. Third call the Board of Health. Fourth, contact the best lawyer you can to get the max allowed in your state. Then sit back and wait on your money and then buy the company.

Your sister will live. You need to call the store immed. and let them know about the situation. Then, you can call the manufacturer of the cocoa. Most likely, the store mgr. will pull the product and contact the manufacturing company as well. You will probably get calls from quality control etc. so be prepared. They will do ANYTHING to prevent a lawsuit!

I'd return the food to the store, write a nasty letter to the food company that made the coccoa, and complain to the local health department.
As for treating your daughter, aside from the trauma of being "grossed-out" she should be fine.
Some people actually eat maggots on purpose...

if you still have the box of hot cocoa with the maggots inside, go to the store and show the manager, try first to resolve the situation at the store, they might have some policies about how they conduct things in a situation like this....do it calm and polite, explain to him exactly what happened and don't forget to reminds him, there's charges for sell products with expiration's date expired...its actually illegal not only to sell products expired, but also put available to sell, even thou it didn't get sold.

Take your sister to the hospital, just to make sure she doesn't get some sort of parasite, etc. As for the store, you can report them and if you still have the packets, take them in and show them and get your money back.
