The same way you want to be treated when you are old. Respect your elders no matter what.

Good luck!

it really depends on the situation, but in m experience...
Im a fairly young boat captain and i run into alot of old cranky farts with a ton more experience and intelligence than me, and hey arent afraid to cut off your head and poop down your neck...

well the best thing ive ever done is treat them just like they treat me, and make sure to call them old alot...

i know it sounds "inensitive" and the liberals are probably all thinking of what to write about being pc right now but it does a few things...

first they stop walking all over you because you have some cajones

second it surprizes them because nobody does that

third and moist important, if you do thius and still show respect for what they have done and where they are in life...THEY LAUGH...

and what di you want in the first place anyway... for them to be less cranky

Nicely. Being mean to a cranky old man wont make him any less cranky. Just be nice and have patience. Tell him you dont appreciate him being cranky to you when you are treating him nicely.

i waited on a very cranky old man almost every day for 6 years. the best way i found to deal with him was to joke about his crankiness with him. at first he seemed a little put off by me, but by the end of the time i spent with him, if i didn't greet him "hey crabby, how's it going?", he wouldn't even speak to me. just test the waters with many different things, and see what he responds to. who knows... you may end up with a friend out of it!

I worked with a hateful ole goat once, he was about 60 or so. All he did was complain about the job and everybody. No matter what the conversation was---he had something negative to say. He always had this "I smell pooh" look on his face.

So.......How should you treat a cranky old man?

Mace him every time you see him!!!!!!!

Treat him with enough respect and kindness to kill him- people like that are really begging to be cared about; I dont really know the circumstances of your situation, but it will initially be frustrating and perhaps even feel futile, but with time he may let his guard down and warm up to you. The more you'll get to know him beyond his crankiness, the more you can understand him. Its a challenge, yes, but if you succeed, you'll feel great for doing this.

With a big smile. Most people will keep up the cranky act until they realize you aren't biting. Then they feel like a big jerk and most people relax and are easier to deal with.

Only slightly different than you would treat a stubborn child--this stage---the "second childhood"--is a reaction where the individual is reverting to the me me me attitudes of a child--it is a defense against and in defiance of the inevidiblity of death--the STAND as it is creates alot of problems for those who have to deal with it because it can be extremely challenging in its complexities--so, as with a child--you use patients and understaanding where it fits and take the tuff love stand where it has to be applied

Many old people are dealing with a lot of physical pain and on top of that it is difficult for them to accept the world as it is today. Try to be understanding and respectful. Remember someday you too will be old.

With a little respect. You'll probably be a cranky old fart someday yourself.

Like the nicest older man in the world! Maybe all he needs to turn his bad mood around is a little kindness!
