I give my dog diazepam from the vets office. Its not expensive. I even have to have the diazepam turned into a liquid form because my dog will not take pills & it's only $14.00 which includes shipping. A bottle of it lasts for months. If you unable to spend any money you want to make sure your dog is in a safe place, away from anything that they can injure themselves on. Larger dogs have been known to jump through windows & such. My small dog (8lbs) injured himself by trying to hide his head in cat litter, sounds funny but it's not his eyes were filled with scoopable cat litter & we had to rush him to the vet to get help to flush them out & have them checked for scratches. We were lucky & there were no scratches & no damage but who knows if we hadn't of found him sooner. Dogs have super sensitve hearing & can also feel the vibration so simple things like turning on a radio or tv don't usually help.

Go yourself and get some of those little poppers (or whatever they are called) and starting far away from your dog start popping them. Gradually, over the next couple of days, move closer to your dog as you are dropping the poppers. Remain calm, talk to your dog, ignore the noise, ignore the fear response behavior. I know you don't want your dog stressed now, but if you do this, you will relieve the fear of noise forever.

that is horrible for your poor dog. my dogs are the same way. we live in New Jersey and your question proves to me that this goes on all summer in other places too!! My dogs are indoor dogs so I bring them in and they cower in the house. If your dogs are outdoor dogs, I suppose they go in their houses and that may be the best you can do for them, if you can't get them inside. There are some pills you can get called Pet Ease...but they really don't work for something a dog would be really afraid of.

Provide her/him a large box with a blanket in it that the dog can crawl into simular to a dog house. Turn up the tv or put a small radio in the box to drowned out the noice.

Nice doggy, sit.

Depending on the size of your dogs, benadryl works great. Buy the generic stuff, I know it still costs $$ but it's cheaper than the alternative which is buying prescription sleeping pills from your vet (which I did initially).

Ask your vet to give you some acepromazine for your dog. That's what we give, it works great! Works great for dogs afraid of thunderstorms too.

*thinks* my old dog was scared to death of fireworks as well. We only had to deal with it on one night...so i do'nt know if this will apply to you.

But..my dad used to put her in our laundry room...i'm not sure if that works though...it was her safe place..she used to sleep there.

So..maybe put your dogs in their safe place? or just stay with 'em and comfort them if you can...

good luck.

Please do not drug your dog. Drugging your dog will only lead to increased sensitivity and anxiety. You need to de-sensitize your dog to the loud noises.
