The first names that come to mind are:
Nelson Mandela - just a wonderful diplomat
Aang San Suu Kyi - Nobel Peace Prize Winner for her peaceable campaign for democracy in Burma - now Myanmar.
I wish I knew more about people making major scientific leaps for our benefit - but I guess that is a more subjective area.
As an additional point - my local paper is always full of stories of hardworking people in my community doing good turns for others. It's people like that in every community around the globe that make the world go round.

If you let me consider someone that is not alive now, I'd say Isaac Newton.
It is incredibly how prolific he was and how many formules were created thanks to his studies.
Those are still used today.
Another person who contributed a lot to the humanity is the discoverer of penicilin, Sir Alexander Fleming.
And finally, I'd say Charles Darwin, he allowed millions of people to think about what they have always been told to think.

Personally I think it is Richard Branson .... his companies are seen world wide and all from selling vinyl records from a small room. He is in evidence everywhere ... planes, trains, finance, music, phones ...... and he appears such a laid back, modest and no frills nice guy.
