In the movies/americans seem to say GRA-ZEE and in some of the Italian I listen to, it seems like they say GRAT-ZE-EH....what is the right way? And why do Americans say it that way?

the italian i is pronounced as e and the italian e is pronounced as short e , so it is pronounced grat-zi-eh . americans say it that way because thier pronounciation especially italian vowels are sounded differently than English. Remember if an italian were trying to speak english they would screw up too. and maybe movie producers should actually get people in thier movies who actually know how to speak the Italian language.

I believe we can transcribe it phonetically in the English orthography as /gra'tsee/, this is the pronunciation I have heard from Italians in New York, and the r is flapped.
