Computer programs are being used to "train the brain." Neurofeedback "Brain Training" is used to help ADHD, depression, anxiety, migraines, panic attacks, PTSD, seizures, cognitive performance, mood and many other brain based problems.
How it was explained to me is that the patient focuses on a particular task (video game in my son's case). As the patient's attention strays from the task in the form of the sprectrums of bored or anxious feelings the "game" does not reward them. However, as the patient acquires rewards for staying focused, (concentrating and staying on task) they essentially begin to train their brain to pay less attention to other mental activities ie: boredom and anxiety.
In response to your additional details, note that neurofeedback is also used to increase "cognitive performance." So yes, I believe that our brains can be trained to perform at its best.
Honestly, it is my belief that a good night's rest and practicing some good ole meditation would work better. Neurofeedback is getting alot of attention in the ADHD arena. Children with these disorders are less prepared to develop the skills necessary to perform transcendental meditation.

our brain is actually better than a computers. It has more input than a computer. The computer can save actual details, it can print graphs, it can cold calculate, but our brains are the best computer ever. The brain can store an image, a taste, a memory, Can the computer remember what a rose smells like? Our brain records sensory preceptions. It remembers what it is like to be afraid . Our marvelous brain computer stores it all and needs memory keys to bring it up again, but it is stored. Not to mention the power of imagination. To dream, to become, to create.
