I am writing a screenplay in which someone dies from an OxyContin overdose, and some things I am wondering about is if mixed with alcohol how much OxyContin is necessary to cause a fatal overdose? And what are it's effects when someone is abusing it (ie are they more withdrawn, or more outgoing)? Also when improperly used how long are its immediately visible effects obvious?

Oxycontin is a downer, and using it with alcohol could cause what we call a cumalitve effect, causing death. It is a pain management drug, when taken correctly, does the job very well. But taken incorrectly, it's highly addictive. It's effects actually depend on the person, and how much they took. If they misuse it, in high doses, they can be withdrawn, paranoid, sleepy, staggering, slurred speech, hallucinations, clumsiness, inadequate respirations, pale color, blue color (cyanosis) and of course coma and death. I would say it would take between 20 minutes and an hour, depending on the person's metabolism, on when it's effects become noticable. As far as it's fatal doseage, that would depend on the person and how much a resistance they have built up to it in the past use of the drug, plus it also depends on what other drugs have been taken with the Oxy, including alcohol. Hope I've helped you with this.......best of luck with you.

The usual starting dose for oxycodone is 5 mg. The whole flap about Oxycontin is that some abusers have so little sense as to try your idea without considering the consequences, and even 20 mg can cause respiratory depression, so if breathing isn't a priority for you, go right ahead. Otherwise, you might want to be a bit more conservative. Oxycontin is a drug of abuse only for complete idiots.

Any alcohol and oxycontin can be fatal-that is the serious risk and problem when people mix alcohol with sedatives.

Actions

slurred speech, more falling accidents, more fractured ribs...more chance for cuts and abrasions.

health failing-more apathy, more depression, less motivation

less cleaning of house and self
less care on nutrition
more withdrawn with any addictive substance or only socializing with other druggies of similiar likes

The dose for dying varies
use history, weight of person, actual dose taken, also certain combinations of other drugs such as stimulants would cause differing effects

Improperly used the person would appear OVERMEDICATED or undermedicated-depending on the misuse

I have cancer and have been on Oxycontin for almost 3 yrs. It is not a med. to fool around with, when the pain got so bad during the chemo and radiation I took more than I was suppose too. you don't want to get out of bed, you want to sleep all of the time. You don't want to get dressed, bath, eat or be around your friends or family. You withdraw into your own little dark place. I have sense then, gotten my pain under pretty good control. I'm still on the meds. and will probably be on them for a long time, so you know I'm hooked and I dread the time when I have to get off of them. I hope this answered some of your questions.

To get some really factual info I would type "oxycontin" side effects in overdose" in yahoo search bar. I am sure you can even find some blogs or discussion boards.

It all depends on the person and how they react to it. And their level of resistance to the drug.
