Aleksander Kashelnikov (I have seen various spellings) who is the designer who originally produced it for the Soviet Union. It is still in production and is one of the most widely available automatic rifles in the world today. Not particularly well-made, but it is cheap and takes a fair amount of abuse so it is ideal for those with little or no training.

Avtomat Kalashnikova, Russian for Automatic of Kalashnikov. Kalashnikov is the guy who developed it (in 1947), .The AK-47, originally developed for Soviet "swarming" techniques, is not terribly
accurate at
longer ranges, either, rendering it less efficacious for hunting.
The AK-47 was not developed by Soviets at all, but is a cheap knockoff of the vastly superior German
MP-43, adopted by the Krauts in 1944.
They look alike, but the actions (the mechanism behind
the firing and reloading of the gun) are entirely different. The MP-43/44/StG-44 uses a tilting bolt, the
Kalash uses a niftier rotating bolt, which makes it easier to maintain and manufacture. The rifles are the
same general layout only because when you have a simple overhead gas tap it tends to create similarly-
shaped weapons.
At any rate, the first assault rifle by the modern definition (i.e. making use of a reduced or
intermediate-charge round to lessen recoil) was the Russian mar2002.htm>Avtomat Fedorov of 1916. It sucked, but it was still the first step towards the
development of 7.92 Kurz and other shorty rounds.

It stands for Avtomat Kalashnikov and 47 is the year, 1947. Avtomat means automatic, Kalashnikov is the name of the inventor. The man that invented the Ak-47 recently said that he invented it for Russians to defend their homeland, not for what it's become. A symbol of terrorism.

Avtomat Kalashnikova 1947.
The AK-47 (Avtomat Kalashnikova 1947 ; Russian: Автомат Калашникова образца 1947 года) is a gas-operated assault rifle designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov, produced by Russian manufacturer IZH, and used in many Eastern bloc nations during the Cold War. It was adopted and standardized in 1947. Compared to the autoloading rifles used in World War II, the AK-47 was generally lighter, more compact, with a shorter range, a smaller 7.62 × 39 mm cartridge, and was capable of selective fire. It was one of the first true assault rifles, and remains the most widely used. The AK-47 and its numerous variants and descendents have been produced in greater numbers than any other assault rifle, and it remains in production to this day.
