A BBQ is a great idea or you can pick up platters of meats and sandwiches and stuff like that from a local grocery store for a reasonable price. If you have room in your home and you're local to where the wedding is, than maybe have it there. If you're not local, maybe see if the bride's parents would mind having it at their house but you supply the food and drink. There's no need to make the rehearsal dinner big and fancy since that will happen the next night.

We had our rehearsal dinner at Pizza Hut. It was cheap & informal & everyone still had a good time. But, if you want to have it at the church, you could still get a few large pizzas or cook out chicken on the grill with potatoes, etc...or you could have a pig picking (if you are from the south)! I know some people don't do pig pickings. Whatever you do I'm sure it'll work out.
Good Luck!!

My brother's rehearsal dinner was in my mom's backyard. We cooked hamburgers and hotdogs and all the classic backyard cookout food. I don't know what your ethnic background is, but Italian or Mexican or Chinese could be fun if that's your background. My friend had his rehearsal dinner with all his favorite takeout food, hoagies, wings, meatballs, salads that sort of thing. I agree it should be fun.

We had a potluck! It was great, everyone had a great time, definately informal, if it's a summer wedding do it in your backyard or make it an evening event at a local park. Potluck is always the way to go I think..But I am cheap...lol

A BBQ potluck would be fun. A great idea is that everyone bring there favorite item and bring the recipe along with it and you can make your wonderful daughter-in-law a recipe box.

Have a buffet. Set up tables with salads, sliced turkey and other cold cuts, vegetables and dips and a dessert and bread table. You might be able to rent a chocolate fountain and everyone loves those.
