I personally believe that when we die, we have a choice whether we want to go on to heaven or stay here. If we wish to stay here, we roam the earth. when we are ready, we go to heaven.

Ec 9:5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing,
DEATH IS DESCRIBE AS SLEEP ALL THREW THE BIBLE

it depends .. like if a person dies and his not burried with propper religious ways .. he/she will roam eg .. suddent death . accidents in jungles lakes and bodies rnt found , murder etc etc .. it roams coz it hasnt got peace yet ..
but if a person dies and is properly burried or burned (hindus) through religious ways .. he /she 's sprit goes to hell or heaven ..

Your spirit stay till the burial only. After that, no choice, it is the total death.

From the CHristian point of view it is:
when you die it is either heaven or hell. no camping out and raoming
