I have a appx 15 yr old big black gelding with a K over Y brand on his left hip. I know he was at Culver academy in Indiana at some point in his life. He is lip tatooed, but you know how hard it is to get information out of the Jocky Club - grrrr! HELP!

I did get an email back from Culver today that was very helpful. His tatoo is very difficult to read - I have been trying for several weeks now. The brand has me puzzled.

Thanks for the help thus far!

If your horse has a tattooed letter-number on his upper lip, there is a high probability he raced. It is that tattoo, letter, followed by numbers that is you best bet at retrieving a background check on the horse.

With a minimum 4 MP camera you will take a photo of his upper lip.

Put the horse on a cross tie, or have someone else hold him with a halter and lead. Place a dry towel or any other clean cloth over his eyes. When the horse is steady and standing correctly on all fours, roll back his upper lip.

Snap at least two photo's of the horses upper lip. Check the photo image display on the rear of the camera to be certain you have photographed the entire tattooed number on the upper lip.

Remove the towel from the horses eyes and walk him around for a few minutes and give the horse a few carrots and/or some hay to show the horses everything is OK.

Download the photo on the 4 MP camera onto a computer. If need be, enlarge the photo. When you are satisfied with your ability to read the letter and numbers, clearly, print the results onto your printer. Make multiple copies of each printout.

Get in touch with either your local racetrack, the racing Secretary's Office, or an equine veterinarian and explain what you want and that you have the tattooed number of a horse whose background you would like to retrieve.

It is suggested that you try the racetrack first, for cost effective reasons. A veterinarian will charge you for his input as well as the costs from the jockey club.

Basically, you want to obtain the letter and the numbers on the inside of the upper lip, as that is probably your best way to find out about the horse.

You could call Culver Academies and see if they still have any info,
i'm not sure how long they keep records on horses they sell-
Try Ed Little the horsemanship director, or Melody Coffin the Secretary.

Do you know anything about his history? The brand may provide some clues if you can find what state it is registered in.
There's also several groups at yahoogroups.com that people have helped others track down info on their horses. Good info in the other answer - providing the tattoo is readable (some aren't by the time they're teens).

If you have his tattoo #, call the Jockey Club. Sometimes they are not terribly helpful. If you have his JC papers, you'll have his registered name. Call or visit (easier) the JC Library at Keeneland, and you can print out ALL of the race records of your horse.

Also, if you know his registered (JC) name, check out http://www.pedigreequery.com for his 5 generation pedigree - FREE!

Good Luck!
